Frequently asked questions

Does Catchbook work offline?

Yes. All 302 species, regulation tables and the entire Australian zone polygon dataset ship in the binary. Coastal marine data (wind, wave, tide) caches on first fetch and re-uses the cache for 30 minutes, so you stay informed even when service drops on the water.

How accurate is the no-take / restricted zone map?

Zone polygons are imported from official state GIS exports (NSW Marine Parks, Vic DELWP, QLD parks etc.) with the source URL and last-verified date attached to each one. Tap any zone badge to see exactly where the data came from and when we last reconciled it. Always verify with the official authority before fishing — we're informational, not legal advice.

Will it identify any fish I photograph?

AI ID is on-device (Core ML + Vision) and works on the most common 90+ Australian species. If our trained model doesn't recognise the species, we fall back to Apple's general-purpose classifier and filter to fish-related labels — you'll still get a sensible result. The photo never leaves your phone.

What's free vs Pro?

Free is generous — unlimited catch logging, all map layers, all 302 species in the guide, all zones, all tides, all hazard warnings. Pro unlocks share cards (so you can broadcast a personal best), AR length measurement, the upcoming social leaderboard, extended 7-day forecasts, full personal-best analytics, and unlimited fish ID per day (free tier gets 3/day).

Why did the venomous fish warning pop up?

Catchbook ships toxicity data for 30+ species — stonefish, blue-ringed octopus, common toadfish, lionfish, scorpion-rod-style cods, every venomous catfish. When you open one of these in the guide, a red Hazard banner shows the exact venom risk + a one-tap dial to 000 + the full Emergency Contacts list (Poisons line 13 11 26, all state marine rescue lines).

How do I cancel?

Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions on iOS. Your catch history is never deleted — Free mode keeps everything visible, just locks share-card export and the leaderboard.

How is the daily fishing score calculated?

It blends seven factors weighted by recreational fishing science: tide phase and rate of change (Australian Hydrographic Service tide stations), wind speed and direction relative to your shoreline, swell height and period, lunar phase (full and new moons score higher for many species), water temperature trend, barometric pressure trend over 24 hours, and UV/cloud cover. The score is computed locally — no opaque ML model — and the breakdown is one tap away so you can learn what makes a good day on your water.

What about Watch and Widget?

The iPhone widget shows today's fishing score, the next tide event and your top species this month — all driven by the same on-device data. The Apple Watch companion ships your home-water score and the next high/low tide on the watch face. A Live Activity puts the recording timer on the Dynamic Island while you're fishing.

Do I have to be online?

Only first-time map tiles, weather and tide refresh need a connection. The 302-species guide, all regulations and zone polygons, the catch journal, achievements, your tackle box, the licence wallet and the AR measurement tool all work in airplane mode. Out at sea, the app keeps using the last fetched marine forecast.

What if I cross a state line — does it know?

Yes. Catchbook reads your live GPS and reloads the regulations, no-take zones and recreational rules for the new state automatically. AR length verdicts use the real state. The home banner updates the moment you cross a jurisdictional boundary (NSW/VIC at 35.95°S, SA/WA at 129°E, QLD/NT at 138°E, etc.).
